Moving house is a stressful time for all involved, but if you have pets to transport on top of all the usual packing, it can add a whole new challenge to contend with. Animals might feel very disoriented by their new surroundings, and of course they can’t communicate with you directly to let you know how they feel! Luckily there are things you can do to help your pets feel more safe and secure, so if you’ve got a big house move coming up, read on to find out how you can make things easier for you and your animals.

Update any important documents

Before you move, make sure any important documents such as pet passports or microchip IDs are updated. Cats have a habit of trying to return to their old home after a move, so if you haven’t already, make sure they wear a collar with your contact details. Also make sure any vaccinations or medications are up to date and register with a vet in your new area.

Pack up the room they spend the most time in last

To minimise any stress and anxiety your pet might be feeling, it’s a good idea to pack up the room they spend the most time/sleep in at the last minute. Keep your pet in that room on moving day with their bed, food, water and favourite toys. This minimises disruption and keeps your pet safely out of the way while you pack the rest of the house.

Stick to a familiar routine

Your pet might be confused or unsettled for the first few days, so it’s important to establish a familiar routine as soon as possible. Stick to the same feeding and walking times and give them extra playtime or cuddles if they seem anxious.

Stock up on treats

Regular treats go a long way to keeping your pet happy during the move! Stock up on some of their favourite foods to give them at regular intervals during the journey, and perhaps place some in each room of the new house to help them feel more comfortable.

Consider daycare

Any moving day is a flurry of activity with lots of people coming and going from your home. If you have a nervous pet it might be kinder to make alternative arrangements on moving day so that they’re not caught up in the stress of it all. See if you can leave them at a friend’s house or a kennel for the day until you’ve made the move.
